Housing Search Process
Follow These Steps to Ensure You Secure Your Housing Assistance
Step 1
Qualify for Voucher
Ensure you meet the eligibility criteria and have received your Housing Choice Voucher (HCV) before beginning the housing search.
Step 2
Select Unit & Submit Forms
Choose a qualifying unit and submit the required paperwork to Fargo Housing before your voucher expires.
Step 3
Act Quickly
If you cannot secure housing within the allotted time, your voucher will expire, and assistance will no longer be available.
Inspections
Fargo Housing will schedule an inspection after receiving the Request for Tenancy Approval. Payments start only after the unit passes inspection, so ensure this is done before committing to any agreements. If the unit fails inspection, assistance will not be provided. Once approved and the lease is signed, Fargo Housing will finalize paperwork to initiate payments to the landlord.

Portability
Porting to Fargo Housing Authority
Current voucher holders wanting to port their assistance to Cass County, ND or Clay County, MN need to request this from their current housing authority The current housing authority, also known as the ‘initial housing authority’, will then provide Fargo Housing with the following required documents:
Questions or documents related to porting can be emailed to: ports.fargohra@fargohousing.org
Portability Intake
Once Fargo Housing receives all necessary documentation from the initial housing authority, staff will send an electronic intake workflow. Once the intake has been completed, including necessary verifications, staff will contact the voucher holder to schedule an oral briefing. All household members, ages 18 and above, are asked to attend.
Additional documents may be requested based on the intake workflow.
Portability Approval Process
Fargo Housing will conduct a criminal background check on all household members aged 18 and older before approving the household. Certain criminal convictions, housing authority terminations, or outstanding balances owed to any housing authority may result in the rejection of a portability application by Fargo Housing.
If an applicant household is deemed ineligible, the portability application will be denied, and the paperwork will be returned to the initial housing authority.
For eligible households, Fargo Housing will issue a voucher with an expiration date of 30 days from the initial housing authority’s voucher. At the time of issuance, the household will receive detailed instructions and paperwork for the process.
